Feb. 11 Absalom Jones celebration is kick-off for diocesan dismantling racism initiative |
|

A workshop designed to promote dialogue and actions toward healing and reconciliation.
On Saturday, February 11th, the Dismantling Racism Commission debuts a new program resource for diocesan parishes--Seeking Our Past, Creating Our Future.
Bishop Wayne has shared with us his concern that our diocese be actively involved in efforts for racial reconciliation, and healing in our community. At his address to our 2010 diocesan convention, he tasked the dismantling racism commission with helping to imagine how we might envision that in this diocese.
The Commission has concluded, and our bishop agrees, that our church cannot effectively engage the broader community in efforts toward exploring our common history, open dialogue, and reconciliation and healing, until we engage in the same process internally.
To that end, the commission has developed an outline for parish use: to explore their past; create avenues for open and honest dialogue; and work together with prayer and mutual support to create a more open, accessible, and welcoming Episcopal Church
Packets have been prepared for each congregation in the diocese which contain materials and exercises for congregations to use as a resource in this work.
The packages will first be distributed at the yearly Absalom Jones and Richard Allen Celebration, Saturday, February 11 at Christ Church Cathedral. Also on the program is freedom rider Rip Patterson.
The 11th is a busy day in the life of this diocese, and while it is hoped that many parishes can send participants, for those that cannot the commission members will be contacting you, delivering materials, and available to talk to forums or serve as a resource during this work. A couple of congregations have already begun this project and will be an additional resource for the diocese.

A Presence in Old North |
|
At diocesan convention, in his address to the diocese, Bishop Wayne outlined a vision of missional, intentional community in the Old North St. Louis neighborhood. Next morning, Standing Committee introduced a resolution that was adopted by convention, outlining next steps. A newly formed Steering Committee will coordinate the proposed project of a residence in Old North St. Louis where a group of young adults can live in Christian Community while providing service with and/or for existing service organizations in the neighborhood. Steering Committee members are: Nancy Kinney, Renee Fenner, Robert Towner, Harry Leip, and Joe Chambers.
The group held its first meeting this past Tuesday, January 17. The committee's first task is to examine the feasibility, available and needed resources, needs and partners in the Old North neighborhood and the development of a business model that will allow long term sustainability.

The bishop has contracted with the Coro Fellows Program in Public Affairs, which works in partnership with Focus St. Louis. Meeting with the Steering Committee were four Coro fellows assigned to this four-week group project: Kevin Medeiros, Idil Ali, Maggie Parker, and Oliver Gould (l. to r. in the first photo, talking with Canon to the Ordinary Dan Smith). The fellows are currently conducting interviews of people and programs in the neighborhood, and networking with other dioceses and Christian organizations that are using the "Neo-Monastic" model for Christian discernment and service in a community.
" New monasticism is a Christian movement that seeks to incorporate both historical ideologies of monks, friars, and nuns as well as the three modern definitions of discipleship, hospitality, and reforming the Church," explained Coro fellow Ali.
The Coro fellows are working out of the Offices of the Bishop for the duration of this project, and will offer their final report to the bishop and steering committee. |

CCABs present the results of their discussions, along with any General Convention resolutions that they wish to submit, in a triennial report which is compiled into the "Blue Book" and produced by the General Convention Office.
As we near convention, look for updates on the deputation's blog. |

Many Voices: the backstory |
|
by Agnes Bolwell, St. Timothy's parishioner
The phone rings and a voice asks, "How'd you like to make a CD?" Hmmm…mow the
lawn, grocery shop, balance the checkbook, OR make a CD!
We gathered a few weeks later, water bottles in hand, confident we could record one or
two psalms in a few minutes and have the rest of the afternoon free. Several hours later, grocery
shopping was beginning to look attractive. Excellent readers were stumbling over simple
phrases; Missouri accents were creeping into Hebrew literature: "Yes, I know it's pronounced
"fore," let me record it again." Then we adults watched as a five-year-old and her four-year-old
brother breezed in and out in one take.
But it was well worth it and the resulting "Many Voices" CD has debuted to rave reviews.
This recording of psalms is not meant to compete with English choir boys chanting in Canterbury
Cathedral. Rather, it reflects the ordinary lives of all who have prayed to God for thousands of
years, using these words.
The readers and musicians who recorded these affirmations of hope, cries for help, and
acclamations of praise include St. Timothy's parishioners who gave generously of their time and talents.
100% of the profit from sales
goes to local area food banks to give voice to those who need to be heard. Feeding the hungry is no longer an abstract concept-- the hungry live in our neighborhoods,
work beside us, and join us in our places of worship.
If, in future, your phone rings and
someone asks, "How'd you like to make a CD?" … say "yes." It's a life-changing experience for
everyone.
If you would like to purchase "Many Voices" as a gift, or for someone who can no longer
read, to listen to in the car on the way to work, or to give praise to God, please contact Agnes at
